One of my favorite authors who emphasizes Earth Day year-round is Diana Beresford-Kroeger. One of her most well-known books is To Speak for the Trees.
Not only is she a well-educated scientist, with degrees in botany and biochemistry, but she has spent her life helping people understand the importance of trees for the well-being of people, animals, and the planet.
From the time she was a child, she was fascinated by trees and other plants. Over the years, she has collected seeds of trees and given them to many people. Some of those seeds are from rare trees that would have become extinct had she not saved their seeds. She urges people to plant the seeds. When they grow into trees, they will help to slow climate change.
At first, it was only indigenous people who understood the urgency she felt about saving trees. Now more and more people are beginning to understand how important trees are to all of us. Trees help to put more oxygen in the atmosphere, and that is good for everyone.
They help in many other ways as well. Not only do some of them provide healing medicine, but they help to keep the soil from eroding, and they provide shelter for many animals. They do so many other helpful things that it would take up lots of space to list them all.
If you would like to do something to celebrate Earth Day any day of the year, plant some trees, either from seedlings or from the seeds themselves. You will be helping to improve the health of everyone who shares Planet Earth.
